Lethbridge saxophonist Dave Renter is jazzed about a mini-jazz festival taking place at the Slice, June 19-20 featuring his new band, The Contemporary Jazz Works Orchestra and the Dave Renter Quartet with Joel Miller the next day.
“For me, I’ve always wanted to see something happening here and the timing was great,” Renter said, noting opportunity came a’ knocking in the form of an email from Medicine Hat Jazz Festival organizer Lyle Rebbeck.

It seemed every band and its dog had a gig this week — both local and out of town.
My week started on Monday night (June 1) with Kingston, Ont.’s Tom Savage trio, who had a dismal turnout at the Slice but who put on a fantastic set nonetheless, starting off slow with a new acoustic material, but then plugging in and turning it up. They played a lot of material from their latest CD, “The County Line,” which added elements of Neil Young and Crazy Horse as well as Cross Canadian Ragweed, with a little bit of rockabilly influence and a lot of scorching but tasteful solos. The trio came off of a three-day stand in Nanton and stopped in Lethbridge en route to three days of gigs in Banff. They are putting the finishing touches on a new live CD, then hope to be back out this way soon.

Earl Pereira is best known for playing bass for Saskatoon blues rock trio Wide Mouth Mason, but he enjoys flexing his musical muscles in a side project, “Mobadass” which comes to The Blarney Stone on Friday, May 29 with rap star Kyprios. Kyprios is known for performing with Sweatshop Union.
“We‘re old friends from back in the day,” Pereira said, enjoying a day off in Nanaimo, three days into their two-week tour of B.C. and Alberta.
Pereira got to know Kyprios back in 1997 when the budding rap star was dating Pereira’s cousin and Wide Mouth Mason was opening for ZZ Top in Vancouver. Pereira got them backstage passes and a relationship began.

It is interesting to see how some bands use technology for the better and for the worse.
While the use of feedback isn’t exactly new, lots of bands use it; most don‘t use it very creatively.
