Protecting our environment

The environment will be in the spotlight June 1-9 when Environment Week returns to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of our air, water and nature surroundings.
Highlights for the week include the Recycling Roundup, Bike to Work Day, Nature Play Day and the return of the Say No to Plastics Challenge.
The week will showcase ways in which everyone can do their part to help protect the environment. Small changes here and there can add up to a healthier environment, and that’s beneficial for all of us.

Saturday, June 1
Recycling Round-Up
10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Location: London Drugs Parking Lot
Bring your difficult to recycle items such as furniture, metal, car seats, electronics and bicycles to London Drugs for their annual recycling round-up.

Sunday, June 2
EV for EVeryone
1:00 – 2:00 pm
Location: Theoretically Brewing
Are you interested in making the switch to an EV (electric vehicle)? Well, Jim from Go Electric YYC will be here to talk about the benefits, the how, and then $$ about these vehicles.

Monday, June 3 – Saturday, June 8
Say No to Plastic Challenge
What better way to celebrate Environment Week then challenging yourself, your friends, or your co-workers to say no to plastic and opt for reusable options. Can you give up plastic straws, waterbottles, coffee cups, and take out utensils for a week? Give it a try and sign up here!

Monday, June 3
Bike to Work Day YQL
Cycling 10 km each way to work would save 1,500 kg of greenhouse gas emissions each year. On June 3rd, bike to work and do your part in reducing pollution. Take a safe selfie departing for your ride to work or a sweaty post-ride office selfie, tag us @environmentlethbrige + #Biketoworkyql and be entered to win some great prizes!

Tuesday, June 4
Green Drinks x Green Trivia
4:00 – 6:00 pm
Owl Acoustic Lounge
Join us on the first Tuesday of each month for Green Drinks! Enjoy casual conversation with environmentally like-minded people in your community. This month with a special Environment Week Trivia! Trivia starts at 4:30.

Wednesday, June 5
Shoreline Clean Up
6:00 – 8:00 pm
Location: Helen Schuler Nature Centre.
Join the Helen Schuler Nature Centre for a shoreline clean up in the River Valley. Gloves and bags will be provided. Please dress accordingly!

Tuesday, June 4 – Wednesday, June 5
6th Annual KEPA Summit
Kainai Ecosystem Protection Association is hosting their 6th annual summit. This yearís theme is Plant Seeds in Napiís Land, where they will be discussing climate change and how impacts food security and food sovereignty. KEPA is excited to partner with the Blood Tribe Land Management department and the Blackfoot Confederacy on this year’s Summit!

Wednesday, June 5
Urban Hens in YQL
7:00 pm
Location: Theoretically Brewing ñ 1262 2nd AVE South
Urban agriculture is a word you might be hearing more of as food sustainability and security become an increasingly popular topic. Urban Henís YQL is a group of dedicated Hen enthusiasts who wish to see the bylaw in Lethbridge amended to allow for backyard coops and the keeping of hens. Join them for a discussion on the benefits of urban agriculture with the focus on backyard hens, ask questions, and find out what is fact and fiction when it comes to down to these birds. Free admission!

Movie Screening: Living in the Futures Past
7:00 pm
Location: Friends Room at the Crossings Branch Library
Jeff Bridges brings together scientists, authors, and environmental advocates to discuss and explore the environmental challenges facing the world today.
Juice + popcorn will be available. Please bring your reusable containers to be filed!

Friday, June 7
Yoga in the Park
12:10-12:50 pm
Location: Galt Gardens
Join Meagan Charlton of Pop-Up Yoga Lethbridge for a hatha flow class outdoors. Soak up some vitamin D and celebrate your environment all during your lunch break. This is a free event; no sign up is required! Just pop over!

Nature Play Day
1:00-4:00 pm
Location: Henderson Lake Park
Everyone is welcome to attend this special event to experience play-based activities hosted by over 20 local organizations. Families are encouraged to attend to enjoy free activities and be inspired by the simple joys of playing outside! Hosted by the Helen Schuler Nature Centre.

Saturday, June 8
Fix It Fair + Clothing Swap
1:00-4:00 pm
Location: Westminster Community Hall
Do you have any household items that need a small repair for it to be good as new? Bring it down to our fix it fair and learn from volunteers how to fix it. Repairing old items keeps from them cluttering the landfill! In addition, the Lethbridge Sustainable Living Association will be holding their free clothing swap at the same time and location. Bring donations or shop, or both!

Ecological Grief Workshop
1:00-4:00 pm
Location: Helen Schuler Nature Centre
Join us for a discussion on the many ways we may grieve the state of the environment whether it be similar or different from other forms of loss.
