Thinking of spring

Lethbridge Herald file photo by Tijana Martin Last year’s 42nd annual Home and Garden Show at Exhibition Park featured elaborate displays such as this water feature which was created in a partnership between Prairie Scapes and Designs and the Scenic Drive Landscape Centre. This year’s show takes place March 20-23 at Exhibition Park.

After a long, harsh blast of winter, you can be sure Lethbridge and area residents are eagerly awaiting the arrival of spring. An event coming up next week will help people turn their focus toward the warmer days ahead.
It’s the annual Home and Garden Show taking place March 20-23 at Exhibition Park, and it’s just what residents need to put the recent cold, snowy weather behind them.
“I think people are definitely ready for spring,” says Jackie French, Exhibition Park’s Supervisor of Event.
“Hopefully it will be warming up a bit to get people more in the spirit.”
The event will feature some 275 exhibitors offering various home and garden services and products – just the thing for homeowners chomping at the bit to get out in their gardens or tackle home building or renovation projects.
One of the show’s highlights will be a celebrity presentation by Sebastian Clovis, former CFL player and now the star of HGTV Canada’s “Tackle My Reno,” “Save My Reno,” and “Home to Win” as well as the resident DIY expert on “The Marilyn Denis Show.”
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a celebrity presentation of this calibre,” says French.
“It’s very exciting for us. He’s excellent and well respected in the industry.”
The success of Clovis’s home-renovation shows is a testament to the popularity of the home renovation trend with homeowners.
“Home renovation is really big now,” says French, noting more people are opting to renovate their present home rather than buy another home. With that in mind, the Home and Garden Show will have plenty of ideas to offer people pondering their own home renos.
“A lot of exhibitors coming in are based on renovations,” French says. “There are a lot of different reno companies and different design ideas for your home that will be helpful if people are deciding to do renovations. They’ll see new ideas and what’s trending. It’s definitely a good place for that; it’s a one-stop shop.”
Clovis’s presentation is scheduled for March 23 at 2 p.m. on the Burnco Patio Stage in the South Pavilion.
The South Pavilion will have a new look for this year’s Home and Garden Show.
“We’re creating a whole new layout in the South Pavilion,” says French, noting there will be a large presentation stage with the Burnco Patio layout on either side of the stage. The Burnco Patio will feature food and beverages along with big-screen TVs providing “a real sports lounge atmosphere.”
The show will also offer visitors an opportunity to win a new backyard through the $20,000 backyard giveaway contest. The prize package includes “everything from trees to sod, dirt, deck, patio, shrubs,” says French. “That’s the biggest prize we’ve ever had.”
The Home and Garden Show will be open from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 20 to Friday, March 22, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 23. Admission is $7 per person (children 10 and under admitted free) and parking is $5 per vehicle.
The Burnco Patio Stage will be home to a number of informational presentations throughout the show, covering such topics as landscaping and lawn care, managing water use in your yard, caring for trees and shrubs, and the value of wall portraits.
The show covers more than 145,000 of indoor and outdoor exhibit space, with exhibits ranging from flooring and cabinets to hot tubs and fireplaces, to landscapers and greenhouses, and much more.
