Music scene slowing down with Christmas near

Posted on December 20, 2017 by Richard Amery

There isn’t a lot happening for live music in the week leading up to Christmas. But get into the Christmas spirit by going to the live nativity scene at the Church of Latter Day Saints church on Forestry Avenue.
It runs nightly 6-9 p.m. Dec. 22-24. There is no charge to attend the event.
There are a couple of open mics this week including an open mic at Coulee Brew, Dec. 20 as well as a jazz jam with HBO3 and Josh Davies at the Owl Acoustic lounge, Dec. 20 as well.
The Slice has their usual open mic on Thursday and Jolene Draper hosts the afternoon open mic at honkers pub on Saturday, Dec. 23. Kelly Klimchuk hosts Honkers’ Friday night open mic along with an ugly sweater contest on Dec. 22.
Local roots musician Ryland Moranz plays the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Dec. 22. Also on Dec. 22, the Slice features a Holiday Curtain (cocktail) raiser with local musicians Erica Hunt, Kurt Ciesla, Don Ponech, Paul Holden and Brad Brouwer.
It begins at 9 p.m. There is a $10 cover.
Just out of town at KCs pub in Coaldale, local country band Bow City Underground, who include band members from Indagruv, will be performing blues, rock and country favourites, There is no cover for the show.
Casino Lethbridge brings back country duo DC Top on Dec. 22 and 23
And last, but not least, local pop musician Tyler Vandendool plays the Owl Acoustic lounge, Dec. 23.

Reviews
Windy City Opry first anniversary
Shaela Miller celebrated a successful year, including recording a new CD, launching a successful crowd funding campaign to pay for it as well as a successful first year of her monthly, Wednesday night concert series “ Windy City Opry, with a huge celebration at the Slice, Dec. 13.
While I missed Ryland Moranz’s set as well as Skinny Dyck and the Chicken Catchers I arrived in time for a solid set by Shaela Miller and her band, which including Ryan“Skinny” Dyck on steel guitar, upright bassist Paul Holden, lead guitarist Jon Martin and drummer Tyler Bird.
They played an excellent show of country and roots music, which turned out becoming an intriguing preview of Miller’s new CD “Bad Ideas” which is due out in March.
The band began with the first couple of tracks from the CD including the title track and “Cheatin’ and Lyin,’ and added a few older crowd favourites including “Friend In You,” and “Still Call Me Baby.”
They had most of the audience on their feet dancing and two stepping by the end of their set.
Shakespeare meets Dickens Tuesday
The ATB community room was packed to the walls for Shakespeare in the park’s second annual Shakespeare meets Dickens’ fundraising show.
I was only able to stay for a couple Christmas Carols, and Richard Epp’s Reader’s Theatre adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”
It was well done, with a lot of familiar faces reading the Christmas Classic. They had several different narrators including artistic director Kate Connolly.
There were also familiar faces from previous Shakespeare in the park production including this summer’s ”A Comedy of Errors.” Cole Fetting stood out in numerous roles as did Austin Halarewich as did Jeff Graham’s Bob Crattchett.
Two different actors read the role of Scrooge including Bryson Brown, who read the first part of the story and John Poulsen took over mid way though the story.
Bell ringer Lucy Graham added sound effects and soundscape including the chiming of the clock as Scrooge waited for his ghosts to visit.
A couple beautiful singers wound up the first half of the show as Chris Peterson, who starred in Romeo and Juliet last year, sang a sultry version of “ Santa Baby” as she wove through the packed floor.
Stephanie Savage, who was stage manager for “A Comedy of Errors” displayed her gorgeous voice on “All I Want For Christmas is You.”

Jenn and Paul Kype at the Casino
Jenn and Paul Kype played the hits at Casino Lethbridge, Dec. 8 and 9.
I only caught one set on Saturday, Dec. 9 which showcased Jenn Kype’s vocals and their country side. She sang a hauntingly beautiful version of Dolly Parton’s hit “Jolene,” to open the set.
Her husband added tasteful guitar solos, while a drum machine supplied subtle beats.
Jenn Kype followed that up by fulfilling an audience request for Concrete Blonde’s ’90s hit “ Joey”
She also sang a powerful version of Cat Stevens’ “ First Cut is the Deepest.”
Paul Kype sang a few songs as well including Bob Seger’s “Night Moves” and joined his wife of a duet of “Jackson.”
He a sang an apt version of Sam Cooke’s “Saturday Night,” then played harp as he sang a heartfelt version of Neil Young’s Heart of Gold.”
