Tune in to new sounds

There are a variety of different bands of a plenitude of genres and styles playing in Lethbridge and, surprisingly, several different record companies featuring an equally eclectic style of music. Unfortunately, there also tends to be a degree of infighting and judgment in the scene among bands and among their audiences.
So one amazing day of live music has been organized — The Magnetic South Music Festival on May 19 — to help get an early start on the long weekend and maybe open up some ears and minds to new music.
There will be 19 bands playing at four different venues on that day — The Owl Acoustic Lounge, The Slice, The Tongue n Groove and Blueprint Records.
The Magnetic South Music Festival features an array of local talent from record labels Esper Records, Mammoth Cave Records and Ghostwood Records as well as talent coming from out of town including Gunsmoke, Red Mass, Role Mach, Hobo Expanding Cult Band and Silver Dapple. Organizers hope it will become an annual event.
The festival is an expanded version of the Mammoth Cave Music Festival, which took place over the previous two years at Henotic.

Ride aims to roll out motorcycle awareness

When most people think of bikers, they think of hell-raising good-ol’ boys mounted on roaring Harley-Davidsons, blasting through town, tangling with cops, causing trouble and trashing the place.
But in reality, bikers, such as those involved with the Southern Alberta Bikers, come from all walks of life, range in age from the early 20s to the 70s and do a lot of good work in the community, raising money for a variety of good causes. And above all, they look out for each other, be it building a wheelchair ramp for Cornnie Dyck, one of their members seriously injured in accident in 2009, or remembering fallen riders.
“The doctors told him he’d never walk again let alone ride. That’s persistence,” observed Southern Alberta Bikers president Dallas Harty.
“Or stupidity,” laughed Dyck.
With the signs of summer imminent, there are going to be more motorcycles on the road, which those driving four wheels instead of two, need to be aware.
So the Southern Alberta bikers are hosting an awareness parade, May 14, which begins at the Brick parking lot at 10:30 a.m. and will end at the AMA building downtown. It is open to anybody with a motorcycle who wishes to participate.

Lethbridge is going back to the 1950s this week, in recognition of Historic Lethbridge Festival running until May 8.
There will be a variety of ’50s-themed events, the majority of them at no charge, happening all over the city from a sock hop at the Galt Museum to films such as “Vertigo” and “Singin’ In The Rain,” and everything in between. There will be activities all over the city, including the Lethbridge Public Library, the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, the Galt Museum, the Centre Village Mall and Elizabeth McKillop Park Pergola in Legacy Ridge.
“I think that I find it most special that we have all of the community groups coming together. I think it’s wonderful,” said Leslie Hall, the museum’s community program co-ordinator.

The Lethbridge and District Humane Society has been matching pets with new owners for about nine years. But they always need help, so they are excited about an April 29 concert/fundraiser featuring Canadian rocker Sam Roberts.
“It’s a big departure from our usual fundraisers,” said Barb Grodzicky, the Lethbridge and District Humane Society haven manager.
The organization doesn’t receive any government funding, so it depends on donations and their usual fundraisers including their annual Dog Jog and the Barebones half marathon, as well as an assortment of other events such as bake sales and T-shirt sales and pet photos with Santa during the Christmas season.
“The Sam Roberts band are big animal lovers,” she continued.
This will be the first such event, so organizers are hoping it goes well.

A local group is getting on board for a worldwide push for a change.
Taking part in an initiative for cloth diapering as opposed to using disposable diapers, a group of Lethbridge residents will be taking part in The Great Cloth Diaper Change 2011 on April 23.
And at 10 a.m. in the Community Room in the main branch of the Lethbridge Public Library, at least 25 babies will be changed with cloth diapers, an event that will be happening at the exact same time across the globe in an attempt to make it into the Guinness Book for World Records.
“There are going to be a lot of parents there with babies and diapers and we’re all going to change a diaper at the same time, whether the baby needs a diaper change or not,” said Kristy Jahn-Smith, one of the organizers.
“There will be people doing it in Malysia, South America and Europe. In order for it to be at the same time everywhere, some people are going to be doing this in the middle of the night.”
