The Lethbridge College Students’ Association (LCSA) encouraged men at the college to sport a moustache for the month dubbed “Movember.”
Participants started the month clean shaven and grew a moustache to raise awareness about men’s health and prostate cancer. Women were encouraged to take part by encouraging all men to sport a moustache.
These moustaches became hairy ribbons for the cause and seemingly taboo topic of prostate cancer.
This November marked the fifth Movember campaign in Canada, which will continue to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Canada (PCC). This is the second year the LCSA has taken part in this cause.
A Cowboy Cabaret will happen on the last day of the month, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m in The Barn where moustaches will be shaven off, final tallies given for the fundraiser, and prizes will be awarded for the best stash.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting Canadian men; during his lifetime, one in six men will be diagnosed with the disease, and this number is expected to rise to one in four within a decade. Rates of prostate cancer in men are comparable to breast cancer rates in women, with a man being diagnosed with the disease every 2.7 minutes. According to recent findings, men are 40 per cent more likely than women to die from cancer due to the simple act of putting off doctor visits and failing to lead a proactively healthy lifestyle.
