Pamela Roth Sun Times For the past three years, Jennifer Zammit has patiently been playing the waiting game. But now the wait is finally over and her test of patience is about to pay off in a big way as she gets set to open one of the largest daycare centres in the province. Pamela Roth Sun Times Whenever the summer months would come around, it marked the beginning of endless travels for the Emerson family. Nearly every Saturday morning, Barry Emerson and his wife, Trish, would round up their three young children and pack up their car to head to the next southern Alberta destination on the swim-meet radar as part of being members of the summer swim club. According to Barry, it was usually an early start to the day, so the kids would often sleep during the drive to the swim-meet destination. The day was usually so draining that the ride home was much like the how the day began, so there was rarely any fighting. |

Pamela Roth Sun Times Six years ago, the West Nile virus had everyone on alert as it began to creep across North America and surface in mosquitoes throughout various parts of Alberta. It was a virus medical officials had virtually no experience with, and were desperately trying to learn as much as they could as more birds began to test positive for the virus. The province began conducting a West Nile surveillance program, monitoring horses, dead birds and mosquitoes for any traces of the disease. Municipalities were required to set up mosquito traps throughout their region and keep track of how many Culex tarsalis mosquitoes — the main carrier of the virus — were found and tested positive for the disease. The province also went on an extensive campaign to educate the public about the virus. |

Pamela Roth Sun Times Nothing could have prepared the organizers of the city’s Canada Day festivities for the events that unfolded from the sky last year. July 1 got underway just like any other Canada Day, with the Astro jumps and vendors in place at Henderson Lake, and one performer taking the stage, recalls Carol Thibert, one of the organizers. But then the sky turned as black as night as the clouds rolled in during the early afternoon and burst open, dropping 45 millimetres of rain on the city in only a few hours. The high volume of rain overwhelmed storm sewers, flooding streets around the city. When all was said and done, roughly 500 homes were affected by varying levels of flooding. |

Pamela Roth Sun Times Finding a roof to put over your head in Lethbridge these days may be easier said than done, even though the rental market is showings signs of improvement. According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s spring rental market survey, Lethbridge had the lowest rental vacancy rate in April among Alberta’s five largest communities at 3.1 per cent compared to a provincial average of 4.6 per cent. While this figure may sound alarming, the good news is the numbers for Lethbridge have risen significantly from April 2008 where the rental vacancy rate was a mere 0.8 per cent. |
