Two pedestrians are dead in unrelated incidents on the city’s northside on Jan. 5.
Both deaths occurred after pedestrians were struck by vehicles in marked crosswalks
At 4:15 p.m., Marilyn Pratt, 57, was crossing the road near the intersection of St. Edward Boulevard and St. David Road North when she was struck by a westbound Jeep driven by a 39-year-old man. She died on scene.
At 5:15 p.m., police responded to another collision at 13 Street and 6 Avenue North. Patricia Diane Matthews, 64, was making her way through the crosswalk as a Ford F-150 pickup truck made a left turn from eastbound 6 Avenue to northbound 13 Street. The truck hit Matthews, who was taken to hospital where she later died.
Charges are pending against the 73-year-old truck driver in that case, police said, but as of press time they had not decided whether to charge the driver involved in the first crash.
Alcohol and speed were not factors in either collision, police said.

LASC Swim Club hosts trial week
Floating the idea of joining the LASC Swim Club? The club hosts its annual new year free trial week until Jan. 13 at the newly renovated Max Bell Pool in the University of Lethbridge. The trial gives swimmers of all abilities and ages a chance to come and try a night, or more, with the club.
Swimmers get to meet the coaches and the other swimmers, and learn about non-competitive versus competitive swimming opportunities; as well as the different groups. LASC offers groups for swimmers of every ability, from the beginners I Can Swim lessons to the provincial and senior competitive swimmers, some of whom compete internationally, and everything in between, including the triathlon swimmers.
Trial swimmers are welcome to participate from 5:30-6:30 pm on any night(s) their schedule allows. Pre-registration for trials are required. Christmas tree collection Jan. 14
Residents can have a greener holiday while supporting local scouts. The city and Scouts Canada — Chinook Council have once again partnered to collect Christmas trees. This year’s collection is Jan. 14. Residents are asked to place Christmas trees out for collection where they regularly put their garbage, but away from their garbage carts. Trees should be out by 7 a.m. and all decorations should be removed. Scouts Canada — Chinook Council will collect Christmas trees in every area of the city.
Since the program began 17 years ago, more than 1.5 million kilograms, or approximately 75,000 Christmas trees, have been diverted from the landfill, the city said. Collected trees are chipped for environmentally friendly mulch stored at Peenaquim Park and made available free to the public for use in planting beds to reduce the need for watering and weeding.
